Former St Mary’s School in Westbury
18th May 2021

Many of you will be wondering what has happened to the former St Mary’s School……….

We are delighted to announce the opening of Westbury School. The school is owned by Unique Care Group, a residential, educational childcare company specialising in providing placements for young people with learning difficulties, including autistic spectrum conditions and co-occurring needs such as ADHD, dyslexia, anxiety disorder, emotional challenges, and attachment conditions. Given the challenges we have all faced this year; it has been a very long journey for the school,  from the renovation work to curriculum development and staff recruitment, little has been straight forward for us! However, we have recently undergone a successful Ofsted inspection, and the school is now officially registered.

Of course, this is now when the real work starts….. we are a safe, happy, nurturing and positive learning environment where pupil voice is central in everything we do. The staff have high aspirations for our learners. We aim to provide a high quality, relevant and balanced education for all our pupils that focuses on individual, personal, social, vocational and academic achievement. For our learners, the curriculum must be highly personalised for each learner, and to this end we have been overwhelmed by the support and generosity of the local community. We value collaborative partnerships with parents, carers and with a range of other agencies, and it is this joined-up working that ensures learners are best placed and are supported to make outstanding progress. Moving forward, there are many ideas of how we would like to develop employability skills for our learners while positively contributing to our local community. Whilst nothing is firmed up as yet, we are interested in running a community café once a half term, looking after an area of the grounds in the church, coordinating a ‘Westbury in Bloom’ competition and as a horticulture project planting wildflowers under the Westbury road sign on the Shrewsbury Road.

A huge thank you to everyone who has helped us and for all of the kind messages of support.

With best wishes,

Farah Quinn,

Headteacher
